Stringing your Racquet
As a new summer season begins, it is important to be prepared with the tennis strings that are the right fit for your game. If you don’t break strings often, plan to re-string your racquet every three to six months. There are countless options, so to narrow it down, here are some basic components you should consider when re-stringing your racquet:
- Type of String: Mono filament strings, with polyester being a sub-category, has become popular among advanced level players. These are long-lasting strings and designed for advanced level players with fast strokes. (Do not use polyester strings if you have any elbow, wrist or shoulder issues). Gut strings are made of just that… yes, cow guts! These strings feel great and can be used by any level player, but they are very expensive and break easily. There are also synthetic gut and multifilament strings. These string types usually provide a good combination of durability, feel and power, and are most often an appropriate choice for the average club player. There are many sub categories and brands for each of the above. Be sure to ask your tennis pro or racquet stringer their opinion on the best choice given their knowledge of your level and personal needs.
- String Tension: Tensions can range between 50 – 65 pounds for most players. A lower tension leads to more of a ‘trampoline’ effect which creates more power and spin, but less control. A higher tension creates a stiff surface as the ball hits the racquet, therefore resulting in less power but more control. The correct choice depends on level, personal needs and preference. It is worth trying a few different tensions and deciding what you like best. Note: the strings will lose 3-5 pounds after some time – more so if they are polyester strings.
- String Gauge: The gauge refers to the thickness of the strings. The numbers range from 15 to 18 gauge for tennis strings. The higher the number, the thicker the string. Higher gauges are more durable, while lower gauges offer a softer feel with less durability.
